With the new year five day's old Noel Ranasinghe - a creative guitarist/singer of repute contacted us to tell us that in 2003 he will be celebrating 40 years in music. "It's a dream, 40 years of La Ceylonians, I just cannot believe it" gushes Noel with the enthusiasm of a teenager. One of the pioneers of the Sri Lankan calypso bands and a pioneer too in initiating the dress code now synonymous with calypso bands - the sarong, the straw hat, waist band and garlands with no shoes on the feet - is now in vogue especially the sarong and shirt with fashion conscious young men. His recent CD "Noel Ranasinghe with La Ceylonians" is a compilation of sixteen of his songs and music with the fusion of latin rhythms is an ideal collector's item. "Kandy Perahera" has its irresistible impact, so too 'Sinavee Obe' and 'Amarasa Mihiri.' A popular radio star in the early years, the veteran Noel Ranasinghe has bridged the gap in music and held the appreciation of audiences both young and old. |
