PM to review Athaullah group plea by P. Krishnaswamy Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to consider the presence of an independent Muslim delegation at future peace talks, leader of the Athaullah faction of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), S. Subairdeen, told the 'Sunday Observer'. The Premier had also assured them that talks this time would be mainly centered on resettlement of internally displaced persons in the High Security Zones (HSZs) in the North and East, he said. It was unlikely that the concerns of the Muslims would be taken up at the Government-LTTE talks scheduled to commence tomorrow, January 6, in Thailand, he said. A delegation of the faction, which has 5 members represented in the Parliament, met the Prime Minister last Friday night, followed by a meeting the previous day between the Premier and SLMC leader Minister Rauff Hakeem, at which they discussed the question of an independent representation of the Muslims at future peace talks, appointment of Muslim members to the three sub-committees and the model of the federal system of governance envisaged by the Government. The Premier assured them that these matters would be discussed at length on a later date but conceded on the need for an independent Muslim delegation at the talks, Mr. Subairdeen said. Meanwhile, on an application filed by Minister Hakeem, the District Court, Colombo, issued an interim injunction against the 23 high command members elected at the party delegates' conference held in Akkaraipattu on December 25. Referring this Court order, Subairdeen said that they had not received such an order until yesterday and would approach the judiciary on the matter seeking justice. |
