Sri Lanka Cricket - a joke to commentators 'Down Under' by Shyamon Jayasinghe in Victoria Commentators of the VB one-day cricket tournament currently being played here in Australia seem to have taken the Sri Lankan Cricket team as a joke. I give below a few of the sarcastic comments made: At the first One-Day with Australia, Sri Lanka side is fielding. Commentator: "Jayasuriya is escorting the ball to the boundary Second match with Australia 'A' team on New Year's Day. 1. Hashan Tillekeratne keeping wickets, misses a straight catch off the bowling of Dilhara Fernanda, who looks exasperated. Commentator: "Tillekeratne has not been behind the wickets for a long time. He is trying to figure out what the job is like." 2. Michael Clerk hits an uppish ball, and Jayasuriya is bracing to take the catch. Commentator: "Clerk is going to be caught... but will he (Jayasuriya) let it go?" 3. Gunaratne is bowling. Commentator: "Gunaratne... well behaved as far as the noballs are concerned" 4. Spotting Avishka Gunawardena in the field. Commentator: "Avishka... not the greatest fielder of all time... but a good hitter of the ball." 5. Gunaratne taking a good catch off Blewett. Commentator: "An excellent catch... good fielding... what Sri Lanka has not done so far... maybe they are going to do it in the New Year. Mind you; a good many of these comments were made by Tony Greig - a once eager fan of Sri Lankan cricket. Who is to blame for our cricket? Captain? Coach? Selectors? or Politicians? |
