Rugby Football introduced into interior of country by cprfu by S.M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy Sports Correspondent The annual general meeting of the Central province Rugby Football Union (CPRFU) will be held at the Kandy Sports Club pavilion today (January 5th) at 11.00 a.m. The present administration of the Central province Rugby Football Union (CPRFU) headed by its President Maurice Perera and Secretary Iswan Omar has done a commendable job in spreading the game of rugby to many new areas which has resulted in a large number of new schools both boys and girls taking to rugby. A notable feature of their development program was that whilst not ignoring the urban schools, the game has been introduced to the jungle areas like Wilgamuwa, Hettipola, Laggala, Elahera, Hasalaka, Rajangana, Namini Oya, Rattota, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. Though Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa do not come under the Central Province, but the CPRFU on its own decided to introduce the game to many girls and boys schools with the help of the Army based there and also conducted Seven-a-side tournaments. One cannot also forget the contribution made by the rugby coaches attached to the CPRFU, namely Saman Edema, Kalu Perera, Y.M.S. Ratnayake and Sangaran Liyanage who travelled widely under difficult conditions to coach the teams on bone dry grounds lacking in basic amenities. The retiring president Maurice Perera whose two year term ends this Sunday could be highly satisfied with his performance with over a 100 boys schools and 25 girls schools have now acquainted themselves with the game of rugby which was hitherto unknown to them. At club level many new clubs have been formed and in 2002 six new clubs made their maiden appearance in the lower division rugby tournament conducted by the SLRFU whilst in year 2001 Kandy Youths SC played in the 'A' Division which should be a feather in the cap of the present administration and has no doubt increased the vote base of the CPRFU from 4 to 8 votes. |
