Pannala motor races puts Sri Lanka on international map

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Correspondent

Motor Racing in Sri Lanka will break into new ground when the first ever motor races classified under the internationally accepted Cubic Capacity (CC) - the McFoil Pannala Motor races organised by the Motor Racing Association (MRA) and sponsored by McFoil - (heat insulator) gets under way at the Pannala Racing Circuit on January 26. The official practices will be held on January 25th.

This is the first time McFoil have come forward to sponsor a motor racing event which augurs well for the future of the sport which is in need of sponsors to meet the heavy expenses involved in motor racing events.

In the past Sri Lanka has been organising using the outdated system of weight to power (Kg BHP) and at present nowhere in the world this formula is being used and the accepted classification is Cubic Capacity. Sri Lanka uses both these systems and has found to be not satisfactory.

Earlier in Sri Lanka the races for standard and unmodified vehicles has been classified as Group 'A' and the Modified cars events as M, S & T (Modified Super Charged and Turbo). But these classifications were not found to be in keeping with the FIA classifications.

Thus for the first time these races will be conducted only on the cubic capacity of the vehicles. It must be recalled MRA was the first to use restrictors in Sri Lanka at the Pelawatte rally last year.

Thus there will be a deviation from the past and the Standard cars will not be classified under Group 'A' and it will be Group 'N'. The Standard cars classified under Group 'N' will be run on two classes - the EFI (Electronic Fuel Indicators) and the Carburettor types and they will be run separately. The classes under which these races will be run are up to 1100 cc, over 1100 cc and up to and including 1400 cc, over 1400 cc and up to and including 1500 cc and over 1500 cc and up to 2000 cc. This will be standard cars.

The Modified Class which will be called the Group 'A' will include all the cars under Modified, Super Charged and Turbo and they will be run under the category up to 1050 cc, over 1350 cc and up to 1350 cc, over 1350 cc and up to 1665 cc, over 1665 cc and up to 3500 cc. These cars will be under Group 'A' which will include all cars modified, Super Charge and Turbo powered.

There will be also an event for Ford Lasers and Mazda up to 1600 cc and this will be a one make event. There will be another event for Mini Austins 1000 cc.

There will be also a Formula Ford Standard 1600 cc event. These changes in the classifications of vehicles will help Sri Lanka's motor racing to fall in line with the FIA standards.
