Healing with 'Soft Movements'

At a time the martial arts is better known locally for its combative uses, local boy Douglas Peiris brings like a New Year gift for the sick what he claims is a Chinese healing therapy - soft movements exercises.

He has started a home based Soft Movements Healing Clinic through his Martial Arts Research Centre at 67, 6th Lane, Rawatawatte, Moratuwa. Peiris, under whose care many tourists come at a Southern health resort, says it is honed from slow ballet-like-movements of the Chinese art, `Tai Chi Ch'uan', explained that these exercises helped relax the mind and its stresses as well as the body.

"As you do these exercises you will find that digestion, blood circulation, and the functioning of the internal organs become more efficient. There are 24 patterns in Tai-Chi Ch'uan. The eight lessons I have selected for beginners are the simplest easy to learn ones", elaborated Peiris (56) who mastered this from Chinese trainers based in Japan during a 3-year stay there.

Peiris claims it is therapeutic cure for illnesses ranging from disorders of blood circulation, high blood pressure, heart diseases, diabetes, spondilosis, tuberculosis, intestinal ulcers, kidney disorders to even cancer.

"China has been one of the first to apply physical exercise in health preservation and through Tai Chi Ch'uan not only are all the muscles and joints in motion, but through regulated breathing and movement it produces a unique dialative effect upon the nervous system, which in turn helps activate or improve the functions of their bodily systems", he enlightened.

Peiris said that he had decided to extend a broader service to locals as well from his Moratuwa centre. (Tel. 648184).

At the same time he warned against learning from mushroom teachers who had attended a few classes of his and tried to go on their own for commercial purposes. "This I must say in the interest of enthusiasts being misled due to the commercialism that has reared its head", said Peiris.
