Ranga Thilakasiri - recond in u-17 javelin throw by LESLIE FERNANDO Ranga S. Thilakasiri of Colombo District set a new meet record in the javelin throw for boys under-17 and Waruni Sanika Rupasinghe of Holy Cross College, Gampaha equalled the girls under-15 high jump record at the two-day Ceylonese Track and Field Club 41st Senior and 30th Junior Championships which started at the University grounds, Colombo yesterday. Ranga, hurled the javelin to a record distance of 66.80 metres in his third attempt to erase off the 7-year-old record held by D. J. M. Udara Jayamaha - 59.07 metres in 1995. Kasun Sameera was placed second 53.02 metres and Nadun Senarath Weliwatte third 24.85 metres. Waruni who is in the National Junior Athletic Pool went over the bar 1.50 metres to equal the previous height held by K. H. G. T. S. Dipika in 1995. Waruni made a valiant effort to go over the height of 1.54 metres but she narrowly missed it. Good performances came from Lakshitha Anupama de Silva of Sri Lanka Navy, A. A. Gayanthika Thusari of Suriyawewa National School and Shamila Sanaduwani of Yasodara Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo. Lakshitha, a former Nalanda athlete and a national school record holder, won a good 'double' winning the 400 metres hurdles - 59.8 secs and the 110 metres hurdles 16.4 secs in the men's open category. Gayanthika achieved a 'double' taking the 3,000 metres 12.07.02 secs and the 800 metres 2.36.9 secs in the girls under-19. She represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Junior Athletic Championships held in Thailand last year. Shamila who is also in the National Junior Athletic Pool had wins in the long jump 4.64 metres and 200 metres 29.0 secs among the girls under-15. Today, the meet will be continued at 2 p.m. Sunil Jayaweera, President Athletic Association of Sri Lanka will be the chief guest. |
