TRAVEL & TOURISM

Yenisey- a blend of Chinese and colonial culture

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

The newest addition to the chain of luxury hotels in Nuwara Eliya is Hotel Yenisey - a 15-room luxury hotel.

The plus point for Yenisey is that it has been built overlooking Nuwara Eliya's two main tourist attractions, the Race Course and Gregory's Lake.

Yenisey is a blend of Chinese and Colonial culture. The marvellous architecture was by Sagara Kodikara and Kamal Dilshan Gunatilleke.

Diverting from the age old tradition of Colonial type hotels in Nuwara Eliya, Yenisey has been built with a Chinese touch and is probably the first hotel in Nuwara Eliya having a blend of Chinese and Colonial flavour. 'I wanted to divert from the traditional 'Colonial' touch which exists in Nuwara Eliya', Chairman/Managing Director, Hotel Yenisey R. A. D. Lasantha C. Perera said.

The 15 guest rooms have been tastefully designed with colourful interior decor and offer all modern facilities to the discerning traveller. 'We have been recording a healthy occupancy rate from the very first day of operations,' General Manager, Sapumal Dahampath said. Dahampath is a versatile hotelier, with wide experience in star class hotels. Dahampath is working round the clock to make Yenisey one of Nuwara Eliya's most popular hotels, offering a wide selection of Chinese, Western, Eastern and Sri Lankan cuisine.

The task of satisfying the palette of guests has been taken over by Food and Beverage Manager, Joseph Dharmaraj who has over 25 years experience in the preparation of International cuisine. He excels in the preparation of Chinese dishes.Dharmaraj has two experienced chefs, Subramaniam and R. K. Daniel who head the kitchen brigade at Yenisey.

The colourfully designed Restaurant/banquet hall can accommodate over 250 guests. The hotel offers its guests a unique opportunity of visiting 18 water falls in Nuwara Eliya on a two hour tour.

Among them are Devon, St. Clairs, Garandi Ella, Ramboda Falls, Pindulu Oya and many more. Bird watching with experienced trackers, is also arranged for tourists.General Manager, Yenisey, Sapumal Dahampath said that very soon all guest rooms will be provided with TV and telephone facilities.

'We are looking forward to the tourist season in April this year where an unprecedented number of tourists are expected this year following the Government's peace initiative' Dahampath said.

The sun, sand, topaz and the blue ocean

by Pelham Juriansz

Nestling by the blue waters of the Indian Ocean at Negombo is a hotel where your dream vacation begins. Hardly an hours leisurely drive from Colombo and away from the hustle and bustle of city life the Topaz hotel is where it all begins.

A reasonably priced hotel with adequate luxuries it is more suited to the Sri Lankan average middle class citizen's purse.

Negombo offers some of the best beaches in Sri Lanka with palm fringed fishing villages, scenically set between the sea and the lagoon.

A day of relaxation in the sea, be it a usual swim or a dip in a hotel pool and a quiet meal by the golden sands beside the shining ocean was what the members of C-CAP(a social service organisation) were looking for and found it a memorable occasion to visit one of Sri Lanka's up and coming hotels.

Thirty six rooms with private balconies, all managed by the owner Jeganathan with a conference room that could accommodate 20 to 30 participants, and a bar and restaurant, it is just 12 kms from the International Airport at Katunayake, and thus an ideal location and hideout for Tourists who want to "get away from it all".

The staff are well trained and work around the clock to make sure that all you need to do is relax and enjoy your holiday.

The food is excellent with Sri Lankan, Western and Chinese dishes and of course being by the sea, sea food is in plenty and prawns, fish and crab on the menu.

Deep sea fishing and boat rides are also organised on request.
