"Educating motorists" by ANTON NONIS Trevor Joseph Perera, Managing Director of vehicle consultancy firm, Auto Serv, is involved in educating motorists about motor vehicle maintenance and inspections which would enable them to avoid unnecessary expenditure on repairs while ensuring that the vehicles are roadworthy. Perera was motivated in this field due to the large number of substandard motor garages which have mushroomed all over the country and the extent vehicle owners get played out almost daily. "The fleecing of motorists must stop and a genuine job must be done on the vehicle," he insists. Some of the salient factors a motorist should bear in mind before driving out are the condition of the brakes, gears and clutch and the state of the tyres. The brakes and tyres are regarded as most important, in terms of the rising toll on the roads. Perera advises those looking forward to purchasing a second-hand vehicle, to receive an inspection report before doing so, a concept accepted throughout the world. It enables the buyer to overcome various inconveniences, he says. He had the opportunity of training at the Volkswagen car factory in Germany on a scholarship offered by a German, Hemut Pierschkie, who was impressed by the young man's talents. Perera returned to Sri Lanka and set up his own automobile consultancy firm, Auto Serv. |
