The grand lady
of the piano

Thirty five years in the music industry and pianist Manel Udugama doesn't regret her choice. In fact she is in a celebration mood and wants to share her happiness with other musicians and with all those who enjoy her piano artistry. Many are the letters of appreciation she has received from guests over the years when she played at the lobbies of Galle Face Hotel, Oberoi Lanka and the Taj Samudra at which hotel she still continues to delight the guests with her rare technique described by many as 'the falling rain' 'serene', 'heavenly' 'sensitive', to quote from a few of the numerous letters received by her.

"I've been playing for the past fourteen years at the Taj and am enjoying myself playing Mondays through to Saturdays from 4 pm - 7 pm, says a smiling Manel, who always appears to be quite unruffled when she sits at the piano stool. Music just flows from her fingers and listening to Manel one wonders how she selects her music to project it to her audience. Experience is the key factor in her success.

Her's is a wide repertoire of music and songs which include semi-classical, jazz standards, evergreens, pop ballads and latin classics, all given a special Manel Udugama interpretation. Manel's popularity has resulted in her being contacted for corporate cocktail functions, home functions and even weddings - the last a recent happening.

An LTCL Performer and an ATCL Teacher, Manel teaches classical music and prepares students for the London Trinity College music examinations.

Training singers is also something Manel enjoys and for the festive season, she trained a choir of twelve singers who sang a program of well arranged carols at the Taj Samudra. They call her the 'piano lady' affectionately. A gifted pianist catch her performance at the Taj Samudra from Mondays through to Saturdays from 4-7 pm, you'll make many returns.
