The week before Christmas saw one of Colombo's more prentitious streets come alive with fun, food and fanfare, in a carnival atmosphere never experienced in Sri Lanka before. Hawker Street, a concept familiar to South East Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, made a rousing debut at Greenpath on December 20, 21 and 22 with a unique Sri Lankan twist that is also being deemed a first. As a locally flavoured novelty, five star hotels brought their food to the Street and offered them at street prices, giving the hoards who attended the party five star taste at hawker rates. Greenpath, decorated colourfully with jet lights, banners and flags, was converted into a food bazaar with vendors from Hotel Galadari, Taj Samudra, Hilton, Oberoi, Ceylon Continental Hotel, Grand Oriental Hotel, Trans Asia, Holiday Inn, Game Kade, Siam Thai House, Sahajahan Mongolian Restaurant, Nana's Halal Foods, Cargills, KFC, Munchee and Afzal Traders. Beverage was supplied by Ole, Nescafe, Roots, American Water, hawked their ware. The fare ranged from kottu rotti, hoppers, shawarma, BBQ, Mongolian, Chinese, Middle Eastern and Indian food. A variety of entertainment activities were also on offer included DJ music, live band performances by the Sri Lanka Army Band, Deflections and Cosmic Rays.
