Mercantile hockey gets underway

The Mercantile Hockey season for 2003 began on January 8 with the clash between Hatton National Bank "A" and Singer at the Astro Turf at 5.30 p.m.

The President of the Mercantile Hockey Association(MHA), Dennis de Rosayro is keen that there be no clash of colours and has advised the players of both teams to ensure that two kits are available in case such a situation occurs.

Further, the fixtures for January 13 between HNB "A" and Arpico have been postponed to February 27 and the one between Singer and Seylan Bank to be played on the following day January 14 to March 3. The "A" Division will consist of Browns Group, Commercial Bank, Hatton National Bank "A", Seylan Bank, John Keells Group, Airport & Aviation and Singer(Sri Lanka).

The "A" division hockey Tournament started in 1953 with Heaths winning the inaugural one and Commercial Bank are the defending Champions. Since 1997 it has been a battle between the banking partners, Hatton National Bank and Commercial Bank, with HNB winning four times and Commercial Bank twice(including last year).

The Tournament is being played for the "Horlicks" Trophy from 1999, presented by SmithKLine Beecham Mackwoods.

The "B" division will start on Monday February 10 with the contest between Sri Lankan Airlines and Sampath Bank played at the Astro Turf.

The other teams in the division vying for honours are Abans, John Keells, HNB "B", Hong Kong Bank. The "C" division will start on February 11-Tuesday with the confrontation between AWD group and Unilevers. The other team is Janashakthi group.

The "D" division will begin on January 14(Tuesday) with the match between SmithKline Beecham and MJF Exports at the Malay grounds.

The other teams in the "D' division are Ceylon Tobacco and Hilton.
