Sri Lanka's shuttlers to be trained by foreign coach by Lal Gunesekera A top badminton coach from either Malaysia or Indonesia will be in the country within the next week or two to work with Sri Lankan shuttlers now in training for the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games to be staged in Islamabad, Pakistan in March as well as for the Sudirman Cup World Championship to be worked off in Holland also in March. The President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), Riza Jumar, told the Sunday Observer that the SLBA are in close touch with the Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) who are at the moment in the process of interviewing a few applicants and this coach will be in Sri Lanka upto mid March. Already a residential coaching camp has got under way at the SLBA headquarters at Maitland Place where the national poolists comprising 11 men and nine women are training under former national champion and Thomas Cup player, Kingsley Nallathamby, who is being assisted by K. Gamlath. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports are also negotiating with the Chinese authorities to get down a top Chinese coach for a period of three years. Minister Johnston Fernando is extending his fullest co-operation to this project and also indicated his willingness to assist the SLBA financially on this venture. Meanwhile, the IBF-ABC Satellite has now been confirmed to be staged at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from February 26 to March 1. Lower ranked shuttlers (men and women) from nine countries will vie for honours in this individual tournament for which the ABC has allocated US Dollars 10,000 to the SLBA to run the event. The countries that have been invited are India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Maldive Islands, Iran, Singapore, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka. |
