Dilantha Malagamuwa an excellent ambassador - Minister Lokuge by Pelham Juriansz Dilantha Malagamuwa, Sri Lanka's only rider and driver to get international recognition in both categories has a great future ahead of him as he is young even though he has a lot of experience behind him. These sentiments were expressed by the special speakers, Minister of Tourism, Gamini Lokuge, and Upali Dissanayake, racing driver of yesteryear, at the Galadari Hotel on Thursday. "Dilantha, driving a Morrison Mosler MT 900R which had a Corvette Engine LS6 6700 cc and 480 bhp, was a hit and a excellent ambassador when he carried the "Visit Sri Lanka" logo on his car and has probably done more for tourism than any other sportsman" added Minister Lokuge. Dilantha Ranjula Malagamuwa is an FIA International "B" driver and is the only winning competitor in the world to have vied in motor cycles & cars. In addition, he has won almost all car and motor cycle events in Sri Lanka. Having started his career in 1980, he is in his 13th year as a racer, be it in riding or driving. He first started winning on a Honda CB 50JX and also in 1980 he came third in a Yamaha TZ350. From 1990-95 he has won almost every car and motor cycle race in Sri Lanka. In 1997, he became the first non-Japanese Asian to compete in the Japan top level Formula Nippon (F3000). His achievements are abundant and the awards and accolades that he has received are too numerous to mention. Recently, in November last year, he earned second place in the Bathurst race in Australia. |
