Name: Damien de Silva Wikkramatilleka Fav colour: Dark blue - may be because I'm an old boy of St. Joseph's College Trendy outfits: Yes those that are comfortable and casual. I'm not so much into names - I appreciate clothes that make me feel comfortable. Hair do's: My hair is now short but I did have long hair when it was in vogue. I guess tints are okay when you are young. Fav music: When I was young it was rock but now it is a mix of soul, rock, jazz funk and r & b. There is no particular segment as such. Your music influence: The band Queen. The four piece band and their harmony were tremendous. Freddie Mercury he was a great song writer. How did your career launch off: Actually through my cousin and godfather Sunil Fernando, the drummer. He played with Supersonics in Kandy and I was fascinated by the drum set even though I played guitar. He had a band in Colombo and I was dragged in, to play. My brother Chris taught me chords and after my Dad's death, I turned professional played guitar and sang with Blaze. Soon after I joined Twentieth Century moved over to Rendezvous with Geoffrey Fernando, then joined Friends in Switzerland and later Purple Rain. After my stint with Purple Rain I went solo in Switzerland played with an Austrian pop band and also with a big band with an Austrian violinist. I came back to Sri Lanka did a concert and am involved in composing, recording and voicing jingles. One and a half years ago I joined Wild Fire but I'm now back on a solo career. Are you superstitious: No. If it is horoscopes etc. I don't want to know the future - our lives are already planned. Because of my faith, superstitious don't bother me. But I like Stevie Wonder's song 'Superstition'!! What makes you happy in life: I like being at home. I've come back after 18 years and I'm back in my old room where I grew up. It's home and I feel secure. Do you still treasure your childhood souvenirs: Only my Under 12 School Cricket Championship Cup. I treasure some happy memories though. In the inter-school tournament we played against now big names Arjuna Ranatunga, Roshan Mahanama, Aravinda de Silva and Rumesh Ratnayake. Where would you like to be most now: Definitely in Sri Lanka - no I won't be going back. I've met Judy and I feel good. I'll probably settle down. What other profession would you like to be in: A pilot. I used to dream of being one. Who do you admire: Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandella. They've proved to the world that their thinking can work. Which character would you like to play in a film: James Bond. Which product would you like to most endorse: Omega watcher. What is your greatest achievement: The concert I produced, planned and performed in '95 at the Lanka Oberoi. I planned it for over three months with a great deal of encouragement from Judy. Crystal Williams sang with me on 'I'll Do Anything For Love;, The Revelations harmonised on 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Somebody To Love' and the backing band comprised Shiraaz Nooramith - drums, Shafi and Priyantha - guitar, Sudu and Kumar - keyboards. What do you think life would be like in year 3000: If they start playing with nuclear then by 3000 we will have a brand new world. If they don't our lifestyle will definitely change. Technology would be high - maybe we won't need credit cards, IDs, health insurance, we'll probably have a chip inserted in our bodies!! |
