Anura Rohana - chance to play in Asian Professional circuit by LAL GUNESEKERA Sri Lanka's top amateur, Anura Rohana, has a very good chance of qualifying to play in the Asian Professional Golf Circuit and his first tournament in the APGA will be at the Caltex Masters in Singapore next week. Rohana with rounds of 73, 76, 73, 80 ended in 20th position in the first qualifying tournament in Malacca, Malaysia where the first 30 qualified to figure in the second qualifying tournament in Johore where 156 players are vying for the 40 berths to play in the Asian Pro Circuit. The event in Johore is already in progress. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) told the Sunday Observer that there are 20 tournaments on the Asian Pro Circuit and depending on the qualifications the players are graded. Rohana who is likely to be among the 40 qualifiers has been helped financially by Rusi Captain of Asia Capital and Sanjeewa Wickremanayake of IBM. Meanwhile, the SLGU have received an invitation and will play in the All-India Open Amateur Championship to be staged in Bangalore at the end of next month (February), but the composition of the side has not yet being decided. Henk Stevens will be in Sri Lanka for the second time at the end of this month courtesy of R & A (Royal and Ancient) and will be spending more time with the seniors as well as the juniors. He will also impart his knowledge to the local coaches and during his stay in Sri Lanka will be hosted by Lanka Oberoi. Sri Lanka are also scheduled to host the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Team and Individual Championship this year, but according to SLGU officials it is yet "in the balance" as a minimum of Rs. 4 million is required. Players from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka will play. |
