Latha - the legend

The legendary nightingale of song Latha Walpola has the rare distinction of having sung over 5000 songs during her colourful music career. A playback singer for Sinhala films her mellifluous voice was launched for the film Eda Re in 1953.

Soon after she gained recognition with the film Prema Tharangaya and subsequently pulled off a major hit with the song 'Honda Hondama Veya Lova' It was a meteoric rise to fame for Latha who burst her way through to gather a long line of fans and admirers much to her surprise.

Now at the age of 70 her enthusiasm and interest in music continues to give pleasure not only to her but also to a wide range of singers young and old in the Sinhala scenario to whom she is considered an icon. A CD and audio cassette entitled 'Rana Monaro' containing Latha's popular songs and a commemoration booklet edited by Saman Chandranath Weerasinghe scheduled to be released at her felicitation concert Rajina Mamai is now available for fans to acquire as collectors items.

Now a national treasure it is fitting that a felicitation tribute in song was arranged with the participation of many leading singers and Latha herself scheduled to sing thirty of her popular songs. Congratulations Latha Walpola!
