Glendower Hotel : A blend of British and Sri Lankan charm

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

Looking for that perfect place for that perfect holiday in the cool climes of Nuwara-Eliya ? Small cozy, comfortable is what you have in mind ? Hotel Glendower is the answer.

Historically, Glendower has been in existence since 1895. The land on which the hotel now stands, was owned by the pioneering Governor of Ceylon, Sir Edward Barnes who built Barnes Hall, now known as the Grand Hotel.

Thus, Glendower was handed down from generation to generation, from owner to owner till it finally rested in the hands of the present owner, Vasantha Jayasuriya, who's vision is to retain the old world charm of Nuwara Eliya while transforming it to what it is today, a star class hotel in 'Little England'.

The warm ambience with which Glendower greets you will definitely catch you off guard.

The bedrooms welcome you to a world of its own.

A world of teak floors, hand crafted mahogany furniture and beds with silk sheets that tempt you to never get out of bed.

Cuisine ? Chinese, Sri Lanka, Western. You name it, you have it. The King Prawn Restaurant at Hotel Glendower, whilst specialising in Chinese, also caters to Sri Lankan and Western tastes. What's more you get to enjoy your meals in a dining room that is one of a kind. A fireplace, tables made of large mara trunk slices, and a view.

Looking for entertainment ! Just a quick walk to the billiard room and a shining table stands before you.

Truly magnificent. Made of Rose Wood by Burroughs and Watts in the 19th century, it's more than 125 years old.

If snooker is not your game, then simply walk down to the 19th hole, the unmatchable 'Pub in the Hills' which is decorated with many authentic English artefacts such as horse brasses, martingale, ash pans and brass/copper jars.

And for music and movies, there's the wide screen Karaoke, Satellite channels, and enthralling action from Surround Sound.

After exploring Nuwara-Eliya, relax, sip a glass of wine and unwind in the luxurious comfort of the hotel's lounge. Enjoy the warmth of the fireplace with its hand carved granite, as the evening gets cooler.

Tired of staying indoor, step outside and experience the award-winning 'mini botanical garden' of Hotel Glendower.

Blooming roses, blue grass, unbelievable weather, Glendower is the perfect location. the 18-hole golf course, the Nuwara-Eliya town, the Hakgala Botanical gardens, St. Clair, Devon and Horton Plains water falls are all within easy reach.

Another interesting surprise at the hotel is Molesworth. Named after the British engineer, who headed the designing of the upcountry railway, it was a part of the original Glendower premises, but was detached in 1925, and later purchased and amalgamated in 1993 by the present owner of Glendower. The original 'Molesworth' was unfortunately ruined in a fire in 1999.

The extension project of Glendower will be named the 'Molesworth Cottages. Twenty eight additional rooms will be built in seven cottages, to an old English design. These cottages will be placed amidst a beautiful garden, similar to the existing award winning of Glendower.

Glendower is a unique hotel, renowned for its originality. It is owned and managed by Jaysons Hospitality Services (Pvt) Ltd. Mt. Lavinia. Its Chairman/Managing Director is Vasantha Jayasuriya.

The new look Ceylon Continental

Sri Lanka's first five-star property, Hotel Ceylon Inter-Continental became the Ceylon Continental two years ago. The new owners of the hotel, Hotel Services Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd. made every endeavour during the last two years to make Ceylon Continental the 'warmest heart in the city of Colombo'.

Veteran hotelier Anil Jayemanne who took over Ceylon Continental as its Resident Manager two years ago, and subsequently promoted as General Manager, worked round the clock with his dedicated staff, to make Ceylon Continental a hotel of international standard and elegance. Operations which began with a semi refurbishment of all its guest rooms, has now ended with a massive refurbishment of the entire hotel and its 250 guest rooms.

All guest rooms have been elegantly furnished.

The Coffee Shop, Seafood Restaurant, Pizzeria, Pastry Shop and bar of the hotel have been given new looks with modern furniture and interior decor. The large and beautiful swimming pool has been modernised.

The latest addition to Ceylon Continental is the rooftop ballroom "Cats Eye" which can accommodate over 250 guests.Going in line with the new look of Ceylon Continental, Food and Beverage Manager, Nalaka Colambage has introduced new menus, offering guests delicious cuisine prepared by the hotel's Executive Chef, Lakshman Liyanarachchi and his kitchen brigade.

New theme nights too have been introduced by Colambage, offering guests a wide spread of food, with a change each night.

'Our hard work has paid dividends.

We are now daily recording almost one hundred percent occupancy.' General Manager, Anil Jayemanne said.
