Industries Minister sues newspaper Industries Minister Rohitha Bogollagama has sent a letter of demand to the Sunday Leader newspaper for Rs. 500 million claimed as damages for defamation. In a letter sent by his lawyers to the newspaper, a copy of which was made available to the 'Sunday Observer', the Minister has threatened to take the Sunday Leader to court on failure to pay. The letter of demand accuses the Sunday Leader of publishing, in its edition of February 16, 2003, an article containing "false, malicious and defamatory statements and allegations concerning him". The article concerned is understood to have claimed that the Minister had threatened a young woman doctor with whom he allegedly been having an affair and, that the woman had been assaulted in the presence of the Minister's security guards. The Editor of the Sunday Leader as well as the writer of the article have also been sent letters of demand for similar amounts in damages. |
