Vaughan and Collingwood give England a chance CAPE TOWN, Feb 22 (AFP) - Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood hit half-centuries as England made 246 for eight from 50 overs in their crucial World Cup match against Pakistan at Newlands here on Saturday. Pakistan's varied bowling attack, led by Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar, kept England under pressure as wickets fell at steady intervals. England would probably have been disappointed not to make more runs after winning the toss, but it was a reasonably competitive total on a pitch which tends to favour the side batting first in day-night matches. Shoaib bowled a delivery timed at 161kmh (101.2mph), the fastest recorded since speed guns were introduced, but he was Pakistan's most expensive bowler, conceding 63 runs in nine overs. He took the wicket of Vaughan, who was caught low down at backward point after scoring a stylish 52 off 64 balls. Vaughan was caught off a no-ball before he had scored when he top-edged a pull against Wasim to square-leg. It prevented Wasim from becoming the first bowler to take 500 one-day international wickets. The left-arm seamer, who went into the match with 498 wickets, took his 499th when England opener Marcus Trescothick was caught behind for one in the third over. No partnership lasted more than 10 overs but England's batting depth proved useful, with Collingwood (66 not out) shepherding the lower order to a respectable total. England captain Nasser Hussain returned to his side after missing the match against Namibia because of a sore neck, but made only eight before trying to cut a ball from Waqar Younis and was caught by a diving wicket-keeper Rashid Latif. Waqar's tactics were surprising. With his team in danger of failing to bowl their overs in time, he did not return to the bowling attack after taking two for 37 in a seven-over opening spell. The Pakistan captain preferred to use Shoaib in the closing overs in tandem with spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Shahid Afridi before Wasim came back at the end. ENGLAND M.
