Poor response for Asian Satellite Badminton C'ship by LAL GUNESEKERA Only Japan, Singapore and India have sent their list of players who will compete at the Asian Satellite Badminton Championship to be worked off at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from February 26 to March 1. This is being conducted by the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA) in conjunction with the International Badminton Federation (IBF) and Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC). The President of the SLBA, Riza Jumar told the Sunday Observer that he was very disappointed with the response of certain countries. The Philippines, South Korea and Indonesia declined to accept the invitation to participate in Colombo. He further said that Iran did not show any interest right from the start, and the Secretary of the Pakistan Badminton Association had wanted a few more days for them to take a final decision after the air crash in Pakistan which killed their Air Chief. Maldives too have yet to send the list of their players. However, Jumar, was confident that Pakistan and Bangladesh, will compete in Sri Lanka and will make up the six countries together with Japan, Singapore, India and the host country. |
