The Heritage : The hotel with a new philosophy

by BEVERLEY JANSZ

The first impression at the 'The Heritage', Nuwara Eliya is that it is "The Friendliest Hotel in Town". It's for the discerning, affluent visitor in search of rest and relaxation where "small is beautiful" and where Sri Lankan hospitality is at its best.

All around one sees "Tag Words" accentuating the fact that PEOPLE MAKE THE DIFFERENCE and that The Heritage - N'Eliya is The Friendliest Hotel in Town.

This hotel, formerly known as Ceybank Rest, now under new management - The Heritage (UK) Ltd., represented by The Heritage Lanka Asia (Pvt) Ltd. in Sri Lanka belongs to a unique class of hospitality institutions in the global industry. According to hotel sources, it is a brand approach with emphasis on environmental and cultural protection, usage of indigenous resources and traditional lore, energizing local communities. This 20 - roomed stately mansion built according to the classic architectural concepts of the Victoria era, is among the most beautiful in the hill - country and has been the country seat of British Governor Henry Gregory.

It stands on a spacious ground on Queen Elizabeth Mawatha (Badulla Road) with Nuwara Eliya's two major attractions, Victoria Park and the Race Course in the foreground.

The view from the bedrooms is magnificent and the rooms are large and airy with attached toilets, hot and cold water, room heaters. Other facilities include telephones with IDD, and a 24-hour room service.

The "Waterfalls" restaurant famous for its quality Eastern and Western cuisine to suit individual taste, has two separate sections for smokers and non-smokers and its walls are decorated with beautiful pictures of waterfalls in and around Nuwara Eliya. The "Black Magic" bar is well stocked with a wide range of wines and beverages and is popular with the tourists as well as the planting and business community in the region.

The famous 18-hole Golf Course in N'Eliya is just five minutes drive from the hotel. The hotel arranges packages with Golf for holiday makers when necessary.

Hakgala Gardens, World's End, Horton Plains, tea plantations and Nuwara Eliya's beautiful waterfalls are among the excursions organized by the hotel.

Plans are afoot for a Tea Center serving quality Uva tea, an English Pub and a Wine and Cheese outlet in the near future to cater to the discriminating clientele with high expectations, who are either on business or holiday.

Much upgrading and refurbishing work visualized in the development plan of the new management company is making headway, and will be completed before the N'Eliya season begins in April, this year.

A significant number of tourists prefer spending their holiday in a heritage property. In the global heritage hotel movement, grand residences, palaces, ancient buildings etc. have been converted into Heritage Hotels reflecting their individual history and traditions and has been a great success. The Heritage Group of Sri Lanka was formed to promote this movement.

On being asked about their future expansion plan Managing Director/CEO of the Group, Saman Rajapakse indicated that they were looking at 3 properties at the moment-one in Colombo and other two in Bandarawela and Kandy.

According to Rajapakse, their approach is very cautious. Quoting Prof. Malcolm McDonald of Crainfield University, UK - the world, renowned authority on Strategic Marketing Rajapakse said that their approach was "One Bite at a Time". He, however added that their vision was to be the "BEST IN CLASS" of The Heritage properties in Asia.
