Sri Lanka sends competitors for 14 out of 15 disciplines at SAF Games by LESLIE FERNANDO The national selection committee (NSC) headed by its chairman K. L. F. Wijedasa have recommended 165 competitors to participate in 14 disciplines out of 15 at the 9th South Asian Federation (SAF) Games to be held from March 29 to April 9 in Islamabad, Pakistan. In view of the financial constraints experienced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the national selection committee considered the medal prospects of each discipline and placed the sports in order of priority: 1. Athletics, 2. Swimming, 3. Shooting, 4. Boxing, 5. Taekwondo, 6. Karate, 7. Rowing, 8. Weightlifting, 9. Table Tennis, 10. Badminton, 11. Squash, 12. Volleyball, 13. Football and 14. Kabaddi. The last three disciplines are 'team games' where only one medal could be won, though a team of more than 12 in each case would have to be sent. Therefore, the National Olympic Committee feels the medal potential (only one) compared to the expenditure involved would not justify any high priority. The NOC feels that team games - Volleyball, Football and Kabaddi should be considered for selection, provided the respective associations agree to raise the funds required for their participation. The Football Federation of Sri Lanka have decided to pay for the footballers for their trip to Islamabad and only Volleyball and Kabaddi have still not decided about paying for their players. |
