SAF games postponed because of the war

by LESLIE FERNANDO

Sri Lankan sportsmen and sportswomen who were eagerly awaiting to compete at the 9th edition of the South Asian Federation Games (SAF Games) in Islamabad, Pakistan from March 29 to April 7 will have to await a little longer as the Pakistan Government has decided to postpone the games indefinitely because of the ongoing war.

The Pakistan Government has advised the organisers and the Pakistan Olympic Committee to inform all other countries participating in the Games regarding the postponement.

According to Michael Karunatilaka, the Administrative Officer of the National Olympic Committee, a communique was received from the Pakistan National Olympic Committee regarding the postponement.

Mr. Karunatilaka said that Hemasiri Fernando, the President of National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and its Secretary General Cmdr. H. U. Silva will leave for Pakistan to attend the South Asian Federation Games meeting to be held on April 1. At this crucial meeting, they will take a final decision on the future dates of the SAF Games to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Sri Lanka were to participate in 14 disciplines out of 15 and were fielding 270 competitors including the officials.
