'Land Bank' to develop tourism industry by Elmo Leonard The Government has embarked on a plan to open the entire country to the tourism industry. This scheme includes the identification of every piece of property within the island which might be of use to the industry. For this purpose, the Ministry of Tourism has set up a 'Land Bank', Secretary to the Ministry Dr Prathap Ramanujam said.
The Southern coastal belt will be the first area to come under this plan. The Government has written to all Divisional Secretaries in the South to prepare a report on State buildings and crown land, which could be used to develop the tourism industry. The Government would relocate such buildings, Dr Ramanujam said. The Ministry welcomes owners of private land and property like 'Walawwas', large houses and places of historical importance, places of scenic beauty and the like to write in. The Ministry would find joint venture partners from the private sector to develop such private land and property to benefit the industry. It would also provide technical assistance to such persons to upgrade their land and buildings. Meanwhile, the Cabinet has approved the Sri Lanka Tourism Market Bureau, a guaranteed company under the Ministry of Tourism, which will be entrusted with the task of marketing Sri Lanka overseas. |
