Healing effects of colour

Colours have a great influence on us. Colour Therapy is as old as the hills and involves the treatment of diseases by colour. The ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Indians used different colours for different ailments. Even the ancient Greeks used colours for treating illnesses. Pythagoras used colour light for therapeutic purposes. Colour halls were built for specific purposes. Colour Therapy treatment is given with other methods of maintaining and restoring.

Practitioners of Colour Therapy or Chromotherapy, say that the cause for a disease is because of an inadequacy of a particular colour in the body. Colours help to bring about an equilibrium in the body. Mr. Niels Finsen of Denmark is said to be the pioneer of modern Colour Therapy. In 1896, he founded a Light Institute at Copenhagen. The fact blue light has a harnessing effect or a calming effect was established by Hessay and Gerrard.

In India there are many colour therapists who complement it with positive thinking. Blue colour is used for bringing about peace, relaxation and easing pain. Red colour is for vitality, strength and to bring about immediate energy. This colour light is particularly effective for joints like the knees, shoulder, elbows etc. Green colour light is used for stomach cramps.

It is said to strengthen eyesight and generally brings about harmony and relieves tension. Orange colour is useful for energising the nerves. Yellow colour is a laxative. It is used for treating indigestion, and certain disorders of the stomach. Purple is a combination of red and blue. For this, blue cellophane paper and red cellophane paper are wrapped one on top of the other around a bottle. Water is filled in and placed in the sun. This is solar charged and is used for treatment. The longer it is placed in the sun, the better. Indigo is also used to treat insomnia.

How does a therapist make out the inadequacy of a colour in a person? The deficiency is determined by observing the patient's nails, eyes, examination of the urine etc. Therapists also observe the feet and hands of the patient. Colour therapists use one colour or a combination of colours to treat patients.

The human body is made up of energy which vibrate like the different wavelength of colours. An energy field exists around and within the body. When these energies are disturbed, application of colours or meditating on them restores harmony in the body.

In the Ancient Raja yoga system, every chakra carries a characteristic colour, like violet, green, grey etc., with the presiding deity like Vishnu, Parvati, Shiva etc.. By manipulating these colours, treatment can be given to restore the normal balance in the body thereby harmony in health.

Sunlight plays an important part in colour therapy and it is used in two methods. The first method is as follows: since bottles of various colours are not readily available, cellophane papers of red, blue, green and yellow colour are used to wrap around the bottles. Two rounds of wrappings are enough. For orange colour, kite paper of orange colour is placed in between two layers of red cellophane papers. Bottles are filled with boiled water. After they are wrapped with the respective colour papers, they are placed in the sun. For wounds, ulcers and burns the affected part can be washed with the colour charged water. Bottles can be filled with oils too.

The blue colour charged oil is very effective in relieving pains. The red colour charged oil is used for leg pains etc. Normally on the second day the water is ready for use.

five to 10 ml. of colour charged water can be had at one time. The oils can be kept for months and even years. In the second method of treatment, the colour cellophane papers are placed on the point of disturbance and the patient has to sit either in the sun for 5 to 10 minutes or the paper is tied around an electric bulb to give the respective hue. Exposure to the sun should be the evening setting sun for mild cases and the afternoon sun for severe cases.

This method of treatment also entails the use of coloured glasses. Sheets of glass are placed on the window frames or door frames where the sun's rays can pass through them and fall on the patient's body. A balanced diet containing a bit of all the colours is essential. Those who lack a particular colour, must take fruits or vegetables the corresponding colour. For red, red cabbages, tomatoes, red berries water melon etc., for blue colour, blue beans, blue grapes, blue plum etc., for orange, oranges, carrots, apricots, papayas, mangoes etc., for green, most of the green vegetables like peas, bottle gourd, pears etc., can be eaten.

So may be it's time to put some colour into your life....
