Both winners keen to get through GCE 'A' Level and continue with cricket

Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer all-island Yasith Mihiranga Maithripala had a successful season this year scoring over 600 runs. He scored two fine half centuries against St. Peter's 50 not out and Thurstan 56.

A third-year coloursman, he has been the best fielder in the D. S. Senanayake side for the last three season. He 'kept' wickets midway this season as the side wanted to strengthen the batting line-up. He played for 1st XI team in 2000/2001 as a 16-year-old schoolboy and scored over 500 runs in the league tournament, including half centuries against St. Peter's, St. Joseph's and St. Anthony's Katugastota. In the 2001/2002 season he scored over 700 runs. Yasith was a member of the champion team that won the inaugural Black and Gold tournament in 2002 which was played between D. S. Senanayake, St. Peter's and Thurstan. He was adjudged as the Best Fielder of the tournament.

He fared prominently in the Lemonade Trophy under-19 tournament. He had two bright half centuries in the tournament. Yasith was adjudged the Man of the Match in the quarter-finals against St. Peter's, D. S. Senanayake College also emerged champions in the 2nd Black and Gold triangular tournament this year and Yasith played a key role for the side.

He was a fine cover fielder prior to taking up to wicketkeeping. As a 'keeper', he showed tremendous skills.

The D.S. star turned out for Tamil Union under-23 side in the division one tournament this year and played only a few games because of the school cricket season. He scored a well compiled 76 against Panadura SC and helps to continue to play for Tamil Union.

As a 19-year-old, Yasith's immediate ambition is to do well at the GCE 'A' Level exam and then to continue his cricketing career in big way. In cricket, Yasith's ambition is to emulate Aravinda de Silva, present Sri Lanka Test captain Hashan Tillekeratne, Naveed Nawaz, Pubudu Dassanayake, Pulasthi Guneratne to name a few of D. S. Senanayake College cricketers.

A coaching stint abroad in Australia or England to enable him to gain more cricketing experience is the extreme yardstick.

Jayathu Neelaweera who captained Sri Sumangala, Panadura in 2002 and 2003 has been playing cricket for the college since he was 13 and he has captained the under-13, under-15, under-17 teams.

In the 2002-2003 school cricket season, Jayathu has scored over 600 runs. He is a right-hand batsman with a top score of 104 against Dharmaraja College, Kandy. He has captured over 40 wickets as a left-arm spinner, with the best being 5 for 18 against Nalanda.

Jayathu had the honour of leading Sri Sumangala College to victory over Moratu Vidyalaya in the 'Big Match' this year. The victory was achieved after a lapse of 22 years. He was awarded the Man of the Match award and also the Best Bowler's award.

He also led his side to victory in the limited over game this year.

He represented the Kalutara District cricket team in several open championships. He was also included in the spinners clinic conducted by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka.

Jayathu has represented Panadura SC in the under-23 tournament, division I Premier league tournament and also in the second XI team.

He too is sitting at the on-going 'A' Level Examination and hopes to do well and continue with cricket.

The winner and the runner-up in each of the contests will receive awards at the main awards show to be held on August 29 at the BMICH.
