'Sunday Observer', 'Daily News' Trophies, at Jaic Hilton tennis by LAL GUNESEKERA Apart from the Sunday Observer and Daily News Trophies on offer at the Hilton Jaic Tower Tennis Gala to be staged on their solitary hard court on Level 3 from May 1 to 4, various other attractive prizes including cash awards, mobile phones, wrist watches and complimentary stays at Jaic Hilton are also being offered. This tournament is sponsored by Aus' Afrasia Designer Tiles (Pvt) Limited with Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) as the media sponsors. The other sponsors are Lion Brewery, Unilevers, Hotel Technology International Services, Packwell Lanka Ltd, Access International (Pvt) Ltd, Rubicon, Thai Airways, Royal Sports, Mediding (Pvt) Ltd, Commercial Bank, Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques, Mobitel, CT Lanka Development Ltd, Oriflame, Wellness Services (Pvt) Ltd, Victoria Silk Stores and Teck Waters (Pvt) Ltd. General Manager of Jaic Hilton, Peter Simson, addressing a media briefing, said that all five events are confined to doubles - boys and girls under-16, men's, women's and mixed with matches starting at 8.30 a.m. on May 1 with the finals scheduled for May 4 at 6 p.m. Whilst thanking Aus' Afrasia Designer Tiles (Pvt) Ltd and ANCL, he also thanked the other sponsors too. Entries close on April 28 at 6 p.m., while the draw takes place on April 29 also at 6 p.m. at Jaic Hilton. Director of Aus' Afrasia Designer Tiles (Pvt) Ltd, Mrs. Nelum Ratnayake, said that they were happy to sponsor this tournament for Rs. 50,000 and that both she and her husband (who is presently overseas) wished the tournament all success. Bernard Perera of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) said that over 75 players are expected to play in the five events. The under-16 events are open to novices (a player who has not reached the semi-finals of any ranking tournament in that age category). The men's events will be opened to combinations below division III of the SLTA's Inter-Club Doubles Championships, while the women's event is open to those below division I. Higher ranked players could play with lower ranked players. Andrew Noyahr (Assistant Manager of Jaic Hilton Sports Centre), Ms. Samantha Amarasinghe (Assistant Marketing Manager of Jaic Hilton), Upul Priyantha (Tennis Coach of Jaic Hilton), Abey Amaradasa (Assistant General Manager, Operations and Marketing of ANCL) too were associated at the media briefing. |
