Sriyani Kulawansa of HNB - star performer on 1st day

Sriyani Kulawansa of Hatton National Bank (HNB) performed the best, achieving a 'double' winning her pet event, 100 metres hurdles for women and the long jump at the two-day Mercantile Athletic Championship Meet which started yesterday at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

For Sriyani, it was plain-sailing as there was no opposition at all from the other women competitors in the two events. In the 100 metres hurdles Sriyani 'clocked' 13.9 secs to come first while S. Nirosha of Slimline came second 23.5 secs. Past Mercantile records and the master results register were not available for references to check whether it was a new record!

Sriyani won the long jump, clearing 4.79 metres in her second attempt but she did not go flat-out in the other jumps. Anusha Dilrukshi of Slimline was second 4.56 metres and Hiruka Fernando also of Slimline third 3.35 metres.

Today, Sriyani will run in 100 metres and she is certain to win the third event of the meet and most probably will carry away the Most Outstanding Women Athlete Challenge Trophy.

The meet will be continued today from 8.00 a.m. and 27 events (all finals) will be worked off and the distribution of awards will follow. There will be trophies for Most Outstanding Men's Athlete and the Overall Men's and Women's Championship trophies too.
