Charles Robinson hockey tourney in Matale May 10

by S. SELVAKUMAR

The seventh Charles Robinson Memorial All-Island Invitation 7-A-side hockey tournament will be held this year on May 10 for the first time at Matale. The previous six tournaments were held at Colombo and organised by the Matale Old Thomians Association, Colombo Branch.

To make this year's tournament a memorable one, Mayor of Matale. Hilmy Mohamed, has kept no stone unturned and held a series of meetings with the committees of the Colombo, Kandy and parent association based in Matale. The last of these meetings headed by the Mayor will be held today April 27 in the chambers of the Matale Municipality. The Mayor is the chairman of the organising committee for this year's tournament.

A total of eighteen teams, including teams from the three services, Police, leading clubs in Colombo, Kandy, Uva, Wennappuwa, Jaffna, Galle and Matale will play for the Champion's Trophy and valuable cash prizes. The matches will be played at two venues, Edward Park and Bernard Aluvihare Stadium.

Governor of the Central bank, A.S. Jayawardena, a distinguished Old Thomian will be the chief guest for the opening sessions and Matale District Parliamentarian and Minister of Local Government and Home Affairs Alec Aluvihare will be the chief guest at the closing sessions and will distribute the awards. On May 10 after the completion of the tournament, a gala dinner-dance has been organised for Old Thomians and their families at the Culture Club, Dambulla.

The tournament is conducted yearly in memory of late Mr. Charles Robinson who was the Principal of St. Thomas' College Matale for a period of 35 years and the generous contribution he has made to promote the game of hockey in Matale which town deservingly earned the name as cradle of Sri Lanka's hockey.
