by LESLIE FERNANDO

The Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka will hold the third and the final trial to pick 12 netballers to represent Sri Lanka at the 11th World Championships to be staged from July 10 to 20 in Jamaica. The trial will be held today at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

The selection committee consisting of Ms Kumudini Gomes, Ms Muthulakshmi Hegoda, Ms Priyanka Peiris, Ms Kasturi Wilson and Ms Kushmi Senaratne earlier selected twenty six players and the pool was pruned down to 18 players after the second trial.

Today, the 12 players will be selected and the names will be submitted to the Sports Minister on Monday for approval.

The 18 netballers to face the final trial - Arunika Karawita, Shani Nissansala, Gayathri Lankathilaka, Thushari Dissanayake, Rathna Victoria, Anjana Thulari, Shasika Samarasinghe, Dhammika Malkanthi, Niroshani Samandrika, Narmada Wijeratne, Lalani Priyangika, Shamika Aponso, P. D. N. Prasadi, Thaloja Perera, Somitha de Alwis, Nishanthi Jayakoddy, Harshani Vijayalatha, Damayanthi Jayathilaka.

Tamara Dharmakeerthi Herath, the President of the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka said that despite a national coach not been appointed by the Sports Ministry, the netballers have been training from last December under the trainer S. Thiagarajah. The players have been involved in physical training and weight training.

During the evenings they have been training in other aspects of the game amongst themselves. Tamara further added that the players who played in the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Championships team players and the Junior Asian Championships players were invited to attend trials from last December. Earlier former Sri Lanka player Yasa Ramachandra was appointed as the national coach to train the netballers but her appointment was cancelled.

According to Milton Amerasinghe, the Director General of the Sports Ministry, a fresh interview will be held on April 30 to select the national netball coach. Those coaches who have submitted their applications are eligible to attend the interview.

A Sports Ministry official and two representatives from the Interim Committee of the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka will form the panel for selection. Earlier 17 coaches who sent their applications were interviewed and the name of the best coach was sent up to the Sports Minister. But due to unavoidable circumstances, the name sent up by the panel was rejected by the Sports Minister. (L.F.)
