Rs 3.8b project underway in Kandy Sri Lanka's largest horizontally spread structure will get underway in Kandy shortly with the commencement of an eight-storey commercial and recreational building. This building would be built low into the valley to prevent any distortions to the view. The construction, spanning over 44,000 square metres was conceived by Property Finance and Investments Kandy (Pvt) Ltd. It would be set up with an investment of Rs. 3.8 billion and is expected to be completed by December. The Board of Investment has granted 'flagship status' to the project. Once operational, the complex will consist of office and shopping areas, a fully equipped recreation centre and a spacious car park. A group of local and international architects would ensure a good blend of Sri Lankan architecture with an international design. MAGA Ltd. is the contractor for the complex. The Walkers Building, built during the British era, is located at the entrance to the proposed complex. The architects would renovate and preserve it by absorbing it to the main complex so that it functions as the street side entrance to the complex. A modern car park with a capacity of over 1000 cars now under construction at an adjacent site will provide access to the complex through an overpass. This project will cost Rs. 750 million and is fully funded by the Asian Development Bank. |
