Pakistan stun Sri Lanka with 79-run win by RANJAN ANANDAPPA in Dambulla Pakistan bowlers mounted a memorable rescue act while defending their 199 runs to deliver a stunning 79 run defeat on Sri Lanka in their opening Tri-Nation Bank Alfalah Cup limited over match at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium yesterday. The total of 200 runs to win was never an easy target, considering the bouncy pitch and the strength of the Pakistan attack, but the Sri Lankan batting lacked any touch of authenticity. None of the Sri Lankan batsmen showed any capacity to handle the Pakistan bowling and it was a batting rout that never could be halted. They lost 7 wickets for 45 runs with the dismissal of Kumar Sangakkara who came in at number three, facing 57 balls with four fours in his 29. Jayasuriya's first ball dismissal in the first over off Shoaib Akthar probably opened the 'gates' for Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya going for a drive off Akthar was well held in the slips by Younis Khan and the rest of the batsmen were up against some superlative bowling as the Lankans perished under immense pressure. Akthar after the initial dismissal of Jayasuriya, answered his skipper's call to send back Sangakkara in his second spell which triggered the Sri Lankan batting collapse. Mohammed Sami and off spinner Shoaib Malik took two wickets apiece. Mohammed Hafeez was judged man of the match. Earlier Pakistan's batting strangely looked colourless when they were dismissed for 199 after having been asked to bat first by Marvan Atapattu who had called correct. The pitch looked a bit different from the one's could usually seen in other venues with plenty of bounce and a slow outfield, and the overcast conditions made run making hard. Sri Lankan bowlers stuck to their job quite admirably and the fielders gave them the maximum back up showing signs of vast improvement since their last outings. Vaas bowled with venom an control although he went wicketless, while Prabath Nissanka struck first for the Lankans in his fourth over having Taufeeq Umar caught behind by Kaluvitharana. Muralitharan cut short the innings of Faizal Iqbal who was batting well for his 21 and then struck twice to send back Younis Khan and skipper Rashid Latiff. Mahela Jayawardena took two good catches in the slips to first get rid of Faizal Iqbal and then took the second in the slips when Yousuf Yohanna cut Lokuarachchi as the ball flew off the edge. Both batsmen were capable of pulling Pakistan out of the crisis situation which they were in. To add to the Pakistanis woes big hitting Shoaib Akthar promoted in the batting order even ahead of Abdur Razaq in the quest of scoring quick runs after striking a sizzling boundary was run out off a Sangakkara throw and Malik followed suit after scoring 20 and the Pakistani batting looked somewhat in shambles.
