Madras - Colombo Regatta May 24 by Leslie Fernando All arrangements have been finalised to hold the Madras-Colombo Regatta, one of the oldest boat races in Asia on May 24 at the CRC, Beira Lake commencing at 3.00 p.m. The regatta will be hosted by the Colombo Rowing Club and it will be the 66th encounter. The last regatta was held in 1999 and Colombo won the Deepam Challenge Trophy as overall champions. Miss Mineli Wijesinghe, Assistant-Secretary, Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) and Co-ordinator Ladies Rowing of the Colombo Rowing Club, said that Madras Boat Club has confirmed their participation at the regatta and they will be fielding an experienced crew of oarsmen and oarswomen. The Colombo crew both men and women have commenced training daily on the Beira Lake under the guidance of former Thomian oarsman Lakmal Wickremage who is the official coach of the Colombo Rowing Club squad. The events to be rowed off for both men and women are sculls, pairs and fours. In addition to the Deepam Challenge Trophy there will be trophies for the other events as well. The Colombo Rowing Club squad - Men: Diluk Aluwihare, Devanka Aluwihare, Asiri Abhayaratne, Udesh Hettiarachchi, Prajith Perera, Sanjeewa Perera, Devaka Seneviratne, Usman Fatharally, Sharen Kannangara. Ladies: Umadanthi Dias, Dilhara Abhayaratne, Niroshini Seneviratne, Minoli Wijesinghe, Sayumi Jayasinghe, Myanthi Amarasinghe (coxing men's fours). |
