Two Indian professionals watch Lankan tennis players progress by LAL GUNESEKERA Two Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranked players from India - Kamal Khannan and Vijaya Khannan, are in the country at the moment upto the end of June to spar with the Sri Lankan players who are in training for the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV) to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from June 16 to 22. The President of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) - Suresh Subramaniam, told the Sunday Observer that this year Sri Lanka commemorates 50 years in the Davis Cup and that the SLTA are making every endeavour to try and gain promotion again to Group III. Trials are going on at the moment and two players who have done well are Rajiv Rajapakse and Harshana Godamanne, but they have yet to play Rohan de Silva, Franklyn Emmanual and Oshada Wijemanne. In a doubles trial, Rajapakse and Godamanne, did well to beat Jayendra Wijeyesekera (a former national champion and Davis Cup veteran) and Emmanual. Players have also returned from Indonesia after the Junior Davis Cup, and they too will play in the trials. The final team will comprise four players and the present eight-member pool comprises Jayendra Wijeyesekera, Rohan de Silva, Franklyn Emmanual, Harshana Godamanne, Oshada Wijemanne, Sasith Wickremasinghe, N. S. Nishendran and Rajiv Rajapakse. The 10 countries that will vie for honours in Colombo in June are Sri Lanka, Singapore, Bangladesh, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Brunei, Vietnam and Myanmar.
