centre in Orugodawatte to absorb Manning Market
A new day and night business complex, the Colombo Trade and Economic Centre with all modern amenities, will be set up in Orugodawatte within the next three months to absorb the traders in the Manning Market. This decision was taken at a meeting last week between Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Colombo Mayor Prasanna Gunawardane and representatives of the Manning Market Business Association. A committee representing traders and Ministry officials was appointed to supervise the project. The Minister, the Mayor and Land Minister Rajitha Senaratne had visited the Manning Market to see its present condition and the possibilities for further development of the market. Colombo's main fresh goods wholesale market was shifted to the Manning warehouse complex in 1982 as a temporary measure. Traders had grievances on improper sanitation facilities, building maintenance, parking and garbage disposal. Karunanayake told the Manning Market representatives that the decision to shift the market was taken due to limited space availability in its present location as four acres of land is insufficient for further development. He said the new centre will include all necessary amenities such as proper water supply and sanitation facilities, cool rooms, banks, lodging, cafeteria, parking facilities, conference room, public transport, a post office and security. The Minister emphasised the importance of traders' compliance with the Government's initiative of assuring the best price for the consumer, while looking after the best interest of the farmer. He encouraged traders to convert their businesses to limited liability companies, as it will help them solve inheritance problems and streamline business activities through better access to banking facilities. |
