Singapore vigilant amid possible security threats SINGAPORE, Saturday (AFP) Singapore will maintain a high level of vigilance amid warnings by the United States and other Western countries of possible terrorist attacks in Southeast Asia and Africa, a minister said in a report Saturday. Security forces "will keep their ears to the ground and eyes open," the Straits Times quoted Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng as saying. "There is no specific security threat to Singapore. Still we must be aware that we are always vulnerable... and therefore, we just can't let our guard down," he said. Washington has warned its citizens in neighbouring Malaysia against possible terrorist attacks, sparking a scathing reaction from Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Britain and Australia have issued a similar warnings covering some countries in Southeast Asia, where the Islamic militant group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) is believed to maintain a presence. The JI is blamed for last year's massive bomb attack in the Indonesian resort island of Bali which killed 202 people from 21 countries. The slew of travel warnings followed Monday's deadly suicide attack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia that killed at least 34 people and was blamed on Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network. |
