Advanced simulators at CINEC Campus The Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC Maritime Campus) has installed one of the latest versions of a ship's bridge manoeuvring simulator and an engine room simulator. With these additions, the campus rates among the best maritime training facilities in Asia. The Maritime Campus, which was recently relocated to the IT Park at Malambe is now complete with lecture halls, workshops, laboratories and a simulator centre. Capt. Aldric Pieterz said: "The use of simulators in maritime education and training has long been recognised as essential to enhance the competency of ship officers. That is why the CINEC Maritime Campus invested in its modern simulator centre encompassing the latest technological advancements of ships, bridges and marine engine rooms". The centre has advanced and sophisticated versions of a ship's bridge manoeuvring simulator with two student stations and an independently manned instructor station. "The simulator is also used for customer-specified training, research and development of ports and harbours and to conduct trial manoeuvres of vessels for performance evaluation", he said. An engine room simulator combined with the engine control room, electrical system and auxiliary machinery too are available for training. The campus, the first Lankan educational organisation and the first South Asian maritime training facility to be accredited to ISO 9001 quality assurance standards by Lloyds, UK, is now hoping to attract foreign students for its courses. Capt Pieterz said that students from the Maldives and Poland have already undergone its courses. "The management is targeting students from India, Pakistan, Iran and Bangladesh for future courses". The campus is also the first and only education centre to receive the National Quality Award for Excellence. It is also accredited to ISO 1400 Environmental Standards and is managed by the Ceyline Group of Companies. |
