Rohan de Silva back in Sri Lanka Davis Cup team Former national champion Rohan de Silva who made his Davis Cup debut for the country in 1990 is back in the Sri Lanka team for the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV) competition to be staged at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath from June 16 to 22. Rohan de Silva last played Davis Cup tennis in 2000. The left-handed De Silva forced his way back into recognition after the trials that were held recently. The other three players in the Sri Lanka side are Rajiv Rajapakse, Franklyn Emmanual and Harshana Godamanne with Isuru Gunasekera as the non-playing captain. Colonel Chris de Silva has been appointed as manager, while Arul Amalnathan is the coach. A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), told the Sunday Observer that this year is Sri Lanka's 50th year in Davis Cup and that they (the SLTA) are making attempts to get promoted to Group III. He also disclosed that the SLTA has made arrangements to conduct this tournament on a grand scale. He further said that Jordan has withdrawn from the competition this year, while Iraq has yet to confirm their participation after the recent war in the country. However, the other eight countries who have confirmed participation are Singapore, Bangladesh, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. The two Indian ATP ranked players - Vijaya Khannan (380th) and Kamal Khannan (somewhere in the 600), are in Colombo till the end of this month (May) practising with the Sri Lankan players. They were earlier to stay in Colombo till the completion of the Davis Cup, but due to their participation on the European Circuit, has to leave Colombo sooner than expected. Meanwhile, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), has requested Sri Lanka to host the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone Group II) tie between Hong Kong and Lebanon at the NTC in Greenpath on June 20, 21 and 22.
