Regular cager tourneys to be held - Gamini Netticumara Regular tournaments will be held among the clubs and districts and in addition, state teams from India and Pakistan will be invited to play in some local tournaments in attempts to raise the standard of the sport in the country which was quite high in the 1960's and 1970's. This was stated by the newly elected President of the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF), Gamini Netticumara, who is the President of Otter AC and Chairman of Senkada and Salaka Group of Companies. He said that his first job will be to draw up plans to find finances for the district associations so that they could organise themselves and conduct regular tournaments, to help raise the standards at district levels. Out of the nearly 23 affiliated associations only 10 are active by conducting regular tournaments, and they include Sri Lanka Schools BA, Mercantile Services BA, Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Universities and district associations of Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Gampaha. Netticumara further said that in future all national teams for overseas tours will be selected from all affiliated associations and that the SLBF will ensure every result oriented coach be given the opportunity to train the national sides and produce results. He said: "New persons must be recruited as referees and trained and graded to stop players from being discouraged. New complaints have been received about coaches refereeing matches and even referees coaching teams. This has to be stopped. (L.G.) |
