Mahesh Nishan Abeywickrama who umpired in the Asia Cup hockey qualifiers tourney in Hong Kong last July, has been appointed an international hockey umpire by the International Hockey Federation.

He is the seventh Sri Lankan to be appointed as an International Umpire. The others appointed before were: Walter Jayasuriya, Willy Moses, Jayampathy Perera, R.S. Somasekeram, Rohan Amarasinghe and Ravi Irugalbandara.

Mahesh is presently employed at Clipsal Lanka (Pvt) Limited and the company has given him sponsorship in his umpiring career which is bound to bring Mahesh and the country honour in years to come.
