Rowing Nationals spread over six days by LESLIE FERNANDO This year's National Rowing Championships will be held for a period of six days from August 18 to 23 on the CRC, Beira Lake. The 20th nationals will be conducted by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL). The ARASL on Monday, June 2 briefed the captains and the coaches with regard to the forthcoming national rowing championships at the Colombo Rowing Club. Miss Minoli Wijesinghe, the Assistant Secretary, ARASL said that rowers have already begun training on the Beira Lake and interesting rowing could be expected from the oarsmen and oarswomen. There will be events for boys and girls under-16, intermediate boys/girls and men/women and seniors men/women. There is no age category for both intermediate and seniors. To compete in the senior category rowers must be a winner of the past intermediate event. The events are pairs, fours, sculls and double sculls. The rowers from Musaeus, Ladies College, University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka Navy and Colombo Rowing Club will participate in the girls under-16, intermediate girls and women and senior women. Meanwhile, the competitors from Royal, S. Thomas' College, St. Joseph's, Ananda, Sri Lanka Navy, University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, Colombo Rowing Club will row in the boys under-16, intermediate boys and men and senior men events. Last year, Colombo Rowing Club and Ladies College took top sports among men and women (overall). |
