ABS wins rights for Chartered Secretaries and Administrators exams by Pelham Juriansz The Academy of Business Studies Pvt Ltd. (ABS) has won the exclusive rights to conduct the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), UK programme in Sri Lanka. The agreement was signed last week at the ICSA premises in Colombo. Under the agreement, ABS would train students for the ICSA, UK programme and help promote this programme locally. ABS claims to be the first local institute and the second in Asia to gain accreditation as a CIMA-CBA Centre. It is also said to be the first Chartered Institute of Marketing-accredited centre in Sri Lanka, surpassing institutes worldwide in student numbers. ABS also claims to have produced the best results at all six semesters at the BIT exams conducted by the University of Colombo. Addressing a media conference at the signing of the agreement, Bentley Barsenbach, President ICSA, said Chartered Secretaries are the only professionals who are specifically trained for the role of a company secretary. Company secretaries' skills are often underestimated; hence their capabilities are untapped. As a professional group, members cover a diverse area of corporate life and responsibilities. There are components to their jobs which require an array of skills in areas such as corporate governance, law, finance, insurance and risk management, he said. ICSA examinations will be held twice a year and the closing dates for registration are February 20 for the May/June exam and August 20 for the November/December exam. Ravi Jayawardene, Course Director of ICSA, explained that the course has 17 modules with a foundation programme of five modules, a pre-professional programme of four modules and a professional programme of eight modules. "There is also a misconception that the course is designed for women, but this is not so. It is open to men as well," he said. |
