'Expressions in light and shade' at GOH on June 22 and 23

Geetha Senewiratne at work

Red, yellow and green grass stretches out lazily to the indigo sky as it gently waltzes with the wind. A few dwarfed lonely trees watch it from the back. This is "Eventide", a picture of grasslands.

A picture among many to display their faces in "Expressions in light and shade" an exhibition of paintings, sculpture and pottery by Geetha Senewiratne, to be held at the Rainbow Room of the Grand Oriental Hotel on June 22 and 23. Not confining herself to the boundaries of a single style, the show-pieces have a diversity and vibrancy of expression, blending a mixture of colours and a rhythmical flow of the brush.

"My pictures depend on my mood and I have my own style. I used to do water colour but at the moment I love doing the oils and have a craving for doing bold lines and curves" says Geetha. Of the fifty pictures to be exhibited, ten are line drawings and sketches, while the rest are oil on canvas, mostly of women, horses and religion. The pictures have a lot of rhythm and movement and speak out boldly with their splash of colour, says Geetha, "I love to mix colours and paint in various shades".

Not confining her creativity simply to paintings, the exhibition will also see some of Geetha's sculptures and studio pottery. Having started out with clay and then terracotta she has now moved on to carving on cement, creating murals of faces, figures and the abstract. While painting she says is whatever springs to mind at the moment sculpturing takes a lot of planning ahead and sketching it out beforehand. Of her pottery Geetha says its more decorative than artistic work.

Coming from an artistic family with a grandmother, mother and elder brother who were all painters, Geetha has been in the field for thirty years, this being her seventh solo exhibition. Other than working on her art she also does interior decor and teaches both children and adults, her youngest student being four-and-a-half years, and her eldest seventy six. (FMM)

The Tuxedo: a directorial debut

THE TUXEDO, a typical Jackie Chan movie is now on at Liberty Cinema, Colombo, Milano, Kegalle and Mekala, Gampaha.

A scene from the film

The Tuxedo which marks the Donovan's feature film directorial debut, comes on the heels of award-winning work as a commercial director. The film is produced by Adam Schroeder.

It is a film which provides for the first time Chan to star as a man who is, himself, completely inept at the kind of high-flying stunts that have set Chan's action films apart. In fact `Tuxedo' does showcase Chan doing the kind of moves that have delighted his fans for years, but here it could be said that it is a case of the clothes making the man. The film is about Jimmy Tong (played by (Chan) an ordinary cab driver, whose abilities behind the wheel, land him a job as a chauffeur for Clark Devlin, a wealthy industrialist, whose real industry is, working for the CSA as a secret agent.

Devlin is put out of commission, but not before ordering Jimmy to put on his prized tuxedo.Jimmy soon learns that this is no ordinary suit, but rather, a state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar tux with features that allow the wearer to do everything from punch and kick, to sing and dance, features that can turn an ordinary cab driver into an extraordinary secret agent. Jackie Chan jumped at the opportunity to play the role of Jimmy,a departure from his usual on screen-persona.

For it shows how an ordinary taxi-driver becomes a kind of super spy because of a tuxedo that lets him do all kinds of special things. The cast includes Jenniffer Love Hewitt and Jason Isaacs. WIRUMA

Semage's pupils hold exhibition

One of the paintings at the exhibition

Pupils of Jayasiri Semage will hold an exhibition of paintings at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from june 15-18.The exhibition will be open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. About 100 paintings in oil, acrylic and water colours will be displayed at this exhibition by nine young artists. These works have a close resemblance to Semage's art.

It was these pupils who persuaded Semage to start an art class when they were impressed by Semage's paintings at a local exhibition. He had by then won many international awards and established his name among the art lovers of the world. His paintings were highly acclaimed by art critics of Sweden, Thailand, Nepal,Japan,Singapore and Malaysia where he held exhibitions.

According to Semage he accepted this request because he wanted to transmit "Semage style" to future generations.
