Pick a movie - any movie!

by Arundathie Abeysinghe

Sri Lnaka's first cinema "Multiplex" will be opened on June 20 at 7.00 p.m. This modern and popular facility will provide Sri Lanka's cinema lovers with the opportunity of choosing a film according to their liking from several motion pictures under one roof.

Cinecity complex

"Cinecity Multiplex" built in the vicinity of Elphinstone Theatre in Maradana will consist of four cinema halls, two restaurants, exhibition centre and gift shops.

This multiplex was President Premadasa's concept which was later executed by the Urban Development Authority and the Tower Hall Foundation. Its importance became apparent after the loss of Gamini Theatre, Elphinstone Theatre and Tower Hall of Maradana to the cinema industry. Thus Film Lanka Ltd. started building this complex in 1994, but they faced many problems.

However the board of directors of Film Lanka Ltd. with its founder Buddhi Keerthisena , the veteran film producer and its Chairman, Vishvanath Buddhika Keerthisena has succeeded in overcoming the difficulties after a struggle of eight years. According to Buddhi Keerthisena the cinecity will have four air-conditioned cinema halls with all modern facilities, in keeping with the new world trend.

"The cinema halls in this complex will have modern facilities and equipment with best digital sound. It will also have a JBL speaker system which will be introduced to Sri Lanka cinema industry for the first time."

"The seating capacities of the four halls are 350, 300,180 and 100.

Three out of the four cinemas will be equipped with DTS sound systems. The main cinema with 350 seats will screen Sinhala films. English films and Tamil films will be screened in two separate cinemas. The fourth cinema will be for screening foreign films of the highest quality, which are not imported by NFC or any other distributor."

"Multiplexes have provided the answers to the ever increasing customer demand for a variety in entertainment."

"Multiplexes have been widely welcomed by Asian audiences. A large number of multiplexes have been set up in Asia. The introduction of this concept in Sri Lanka would be a boost to the local film industry."

Cinema has always been a good mode of family entertainment. But traditional cinema halls do not offer people a choice of viewing. But at a multiplex people can select a film of their choice and also engage in a lot of other entertainment activities including shopping," Buddhi said.
