Miss International and Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Tourism International :

The stage is set

by Jayanthi Liyanage

The long suspense is over. "Seba", the franchise director, has finally revealed the grand day. The high-flying young aspirants from Colombo and the provinces alike, may now rush to the paper-stands for a copy of an ANCL daily or weekly, that carries the entry coupon.

Come September 13 and from the beauty ambassadors who will stride across the ramp of Trans Asia Hotel, two queens will be crowned as Miss Sri Lanka - one, to fly to Tokyo to represent Sri Lanka at Miss International beauty pageant which begins on September 24; the other, to remain and join the beauty queens flying in from 60 countries to contest at Miss Tourism International pageant, to be held at the BMICH later in the year.

So Trans Asia Hotel is the venue, and September 13 is the date which can set the ball rolling for the aspiring young woman, eager for a dash of local or international fame. From those who participated in Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Tourism International pageant last year, many have marched forward to make their ambitions and dreams come true : some flew overseas to try their talents at more international beauty pageants; for some, the pageant was a launching pad for careers such as fashion modelling, TV presenting or in the public relations arena; yet others used the pageant simply to enjoy themselves, meet new friends, travel in the country and beyond, and broaden their experiences of what they could do with their lives and talents, while bringing the message of goodwill and international friendship to those they met. Plus, of course, the possibility of winning at least one mini-title of many on offer, coupled with prizes.

Prior to the local pageant in September, the contestants can taste the excitement of four mini-pageants. Miss Swim Suit, Miss Photogenic and Miss Talent will be held in prominent local hotels while Miss Personality will kick off to a roaring start at a night club. All these lead to the scintillating local pageant on September 13, followed by a glittering dinner dance.

The lucky one crowned Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Tourism International will get the rare opportunity to be part of the five international mini-pageants, hosted in exotic locations around the island, before vying for the grand title in the super finals. An experience which last year's local title-holder, Anoja de Mel, simply expressed as, "I am having fun!"

Miss Sri Lanka crowned for Miss International pageant in Tokyo, will be the first Sri Lankan to fly to this contest and naturally, a host of new experiences will await this new beauty queen.

Now, for the man himself, who makes all this pageantry possible. Sebastian Perera, Chairman, Celsin Ltd., is a name famed for international beauty pageants, being the franchise director of twelve of them scattered around the world, as well as the owner of Miss Asia International pageant.

His easy conquest of the "global beauty arena" has been cemented by his successful management of five internationally-acclaimed cosmetics, becoming the first Asian to be appointed the Far East Manager of Gala Cosmetic House in London.

As the Chairman, Organising Committee for the two forthcoming pageants, Seba is backed by the expertise of Usha Jayawardena who spearheads the local pageant; Jackie Perera, Director, Celsin Ltd.; Ranjit Upali; Ananda Samarakoon; Shirley Ganegoda and Dhammika Gunasekera.
