French world music concert by Minaro

Three major music happenings will sweep you off your feet when the French Embassy and Alliance Francaise hold a French Week in collaboration with Trans Asia Colombo. "Reflections of the Past", a Charity Ball with Misty and the Navy Band will be held on Thursday, June 19 at the Kings Court 7.30 p.m.

Special music from the 50s will be a highlight, so those of you who enjoy dancing to the music of the 50s and 60s make sure you are part of this happening. Most of all, proceeds from this Charity Ball will go towards helping our deprived children as well as the flood victims through Ladani, Four Seasons and the Sri Lankan Red Cross. Tickets available at the Alliance Francaise and Trans Asia.

The other happening is the Concert by Minaro a Parisian group from the East of Paris, famous for their French world music. Rich in oriental influence the group will be flown in by SriLankan Airlines and will perform on Friday, June 20 at the Beira Terrace from 7 p.m.

This will be Minaro's first performance in the East, with Michel Leclere (voice and accordion), Nabil Korichi (voice and drums), Rodolphe Jacquier (guitar), Anne Froidevaux (accordion), Olivier Cuinat (doublebass, harmonica) and Jerome Benssoussan (trumpet and clarinet).

The support act - the opening one - will be Nesan's Drum Studio with guests, pianist Harsha Makalanda, flautist Priyantha Dassanayake and Ravibandu the Kandyan drums maestro. Pandit Amaradeva who has been awarded the French medal of Officer des Arts et Lettres will join in to sing some of his famous melodies. Entrance to the concert by Minaro will be by passes which are available at Alliance Francaise and Trans Asia.

Of course the traditional Fete de la musique will come alive at the New Town Hall on June 28 complete with food stalls for a whole day of enjoyment.
