UNP politicians to be kept under check by Don Asoka Wijewardena UNP politicians found guilty of interfering with law enforcement or abusing their political power for personal gains face expulsion from the party, when the new code of ethics comes into effect next month. The new code of ethics empower the General Secretary of the party to take whatever necessary disciplinary action, including dismissal of party members if they are found to have breached the rules and regulations. All UNP parliamentarians will be called upon to take an oath before the UNP General Secretary pleadging to abide by the code of conduct. The new set of ethics is scheduled to be introduced by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the UNP Executive Committee meeting in Embilipitiya next month. Among other rules of conduct, the call specifies that politicians should not interfere in tender procedures of either public or private sector, use their influence to interfere with law enforcement, attend public or political functions under the influence of liquor. UNP General Secretary, Senarath Kapukotuwa,told the "Sunday Observer" interference by some politicians, especially with the law enforcement officers and lack of consideration about the party discipline had caused serious damage to the party image. He said this had compelled the party to effectively implement a new code of ethics with strict adherence for politicians to follow. |
