Vidyartha beat St. Sylvester's 15/8 by Kandy Sports Corr Vidyartha College came up with a fine performance to beat their traditional rivals St. Sylvester's College 15 points (1 goal, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 8 (1 try, 1 penalty) in their schools Milo Cup 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at the Bogambara Stadium Kandy. At half-time, St. Sylvester's led 8-3. Vidyartha College eight though lighter in weight came up with a plucky performance to out play the Sylvestrians eight. But the scrums and line outs appeared to be evenly shared and an extremely fast game of rugby was witnessed. It was the Sylvestrians who kept the scoreboard moving when full back N. B. Udalagama joined the three quarters with a breezy run scored mid left for an unconverted try. Shortly afterwards, the Sylvestrians missed converting a 25-metre penalty. A few minutes from the short blast full back and skipper Suranga Pushpakumara fired a 30-metre penalty to reduce the lead to 3-8. After the resumption the Sylvestrians went further ahead through a 30-metre penalty converted by fly half Chandika Gihan to give the edge once again. But the Vidyartha College came storming back into the game through some bustling play. They forced a couple of scrums in deep inside their opponents territory before hooker Kamal Liyanage planted a try near the corner flag off a ruck to level the scores. Vidyartha made sure of victory when their three quarters moved the ball for winger Kosala Tissera score near the posts and full back Suranga Pushpakumara added the extra points. P. Fernando refereed. Vidyartha won the junior game 15-7. |
