Navy beat Kandy Youths 33/21

by KANDY SPORTS CORR.

Kandy Youths Sports Club's mission for that elusive win this season failed once again when they went down fighting to Navy Sports Club by 33 points (1 goal, 4 tries, 1 penalty) to 21 (3 goals) in the Caltex 'A' Division Rugby League tournament match played at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium on Friday. At half time Kandy Youths led 14-13.

Navy owe their victory to their heavy pack and better fitness which allowed them to score at crucial stages. But the scoreline does not indicate the true story as some miscalculation on the part of Kandy Youths which brought the sailors victory. Kandy Youths have come with some plucky performances in their last three outings.

They did not fare too badly against Police and then won and lost their match against Air Force and this match was theirs before losing the grip in the last ten minutes of play. At that stage the score was Navy leading 25 - 21 when they missed scoring a try. It was Navy who scored first through a try by hooker K. S. P. Kumara off a ruck followed by another try by the corner flag by winger Ujith Fernando.

Kandy Youths hit back with centre A de Alwis ran in a try mid left and centre Asela Perera gave the finishing touches to a bout of passing by the centre three quarters to touch down mid left.

Scrum half added the extra points to both these tries. Just before the short blast Navy full back N.A. I. R. Gunapala fired across a penalty to reduce the lead. After resumption the sailors forged ahead when flanker S. Fernando scored after a forward rush and full back Gunapala added the extra points for Navy to regain the lead to 20 - 14. Another try by lock forward Deepal Niroshan saw the sailors increase their lead further to 25-14.

Kandy Youths at this stage launched a series of attack and second and third phase play was evident and in one such attack scrum S. A. Niyadagala scored off a ruck mid right and added the points himself and the scores stood at Navy 25-21.

Though Kandy Youths defended well they did not have the killer instinct to go for the kill and lost grip on the game in the last ten minutes during which winger Ujith Fernando scored a try and a penalty fired by full back R. Gunapala gave them a 33-21 victory.
